Talking Faith
‘Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have’. – 1 Peter 3:15
I was once asked the question, ‘What difference does your Christian faith make to your life’? After pausing, I explained it was a faith of hope that things are not out of control, that one day everything will be put right, and that I have a part to play in making the world a better place. It was all couched in the language of what Jesus has done and what he continues to do through me and the church.
I’ve seen members of the URC bringing hope and support to individuals and local communities, through activities including coffee mornings, food banks, parenting groups, delivering youth work and much more. I’ve often asked, ‘Why do you do this? But I’ve found that many of us struggle to articulate a reason why as Christians we do what we do.
In 2023 and 2024, our Synod theme will be Talking Faith. We hope to encourage one another to verbally express the difference faith makes to our lives and to those around us.
I believe that we don’t simply do nice things because we are good people but because our faith in Christ compels us to be Jesus to those around us through practical service and talking faith.
Please keep your eyes open for Synod resources and invitations to help you explore becoming more confident in talking faith.
May God bless you in all you do and may you have courage and wisdom to know when and how to talk faith.
Blessings,
Geoff.
