St Andrew’s Meols URC engage environmental changes to gain Eco Church Bronze Award

A number of environmental initiatives have led to an Eco Church Bronze Award for St Andrew’s Meols URC. The Award recognised the Church’s efforts to care for God’s earth in Worship and Teaching, Management of Buildings and Land Community and Global Engagement Lifestyle. Initiatives included a monthly community recycling project, regular eco communications, use of the community garden, the wide-spread use of LED lights, extensive double glazing and new heating in the main church.

St Andrew’s Meols URC member and non-serving Elder Cliff Addison, commented on behalf of the Eco Church Award coordinators:

“Items that are difficult to recycle are regularly collected at the Church, via efforts such as our monthly Tetra Pak Sunday. The Church garden was opened to all, inspired by a mother’s donation of a wooden bench named for her son. Raised beds with fruit and vegetables were installed to contribute to a local Incredible Edibles initiative. Sustainability and the environment were mentioned regularly in worship and in bi-monthly newsletter articles.

“We intend to use this award to motivate the congregation and our uniformed organisations to walk and cycle more, as first steps to improve our Lifestyle, as well as our Community and Global Engagement scores to obtain an Eco Church Silver award.”

Eco Church is A Rocha UK’s award scheme for churches in England and Wales who want to demonstrate that the gospel is good news for God’s earth. The Eco Synod Award is a development of Eco Church whereby a URC Synod can register its interest in and work towards an award. The two awards are designed to complement each other, encouraging both Synod-level and local church-level engagement with Eco Church.
